The tube opening is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in the eye. Bacitracin, Neomycin and Polymyxin B are antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. Each gram contains Bacitracin Zinc units, Neomycin Sulfate 5 mg equivalent to 3. The three antibiotics bacitracin-neomycin-polymyxin provide a broad spectrum of activity against the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria commonly involved in superficial infections of the eyelid and conjunctiva.
Bacitracin is effective against gram-positive bacteria including hemolytic and nonhemolytic streptococci and staphylococci. Resistant strains rarely develop. Neomycin is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including staphylococci, Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae and many strains of Proteus and Pseudomonas. Polymyxin B is bactericidal to gram-negative bacteria especially Pseudomonas. No resistant strains have been found to develop in vivo.
Do not use B. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment if your pet has a viral or fungal infection of the eye. It is used for bacterial infections only. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating. Use this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Wash your hands prior to using the eye ointment.
Apply a thin film of over the cornea three to four times daily in dogs and cats. The area should be properly cleansed prior to use. Foreign bodies, crusted exudates and debris should be carefully removed.
Store B. Keep the tube properly capped. Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
An overdose of this medication is unlikely. If an overdose is suspected, wash the eye with water and seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. The exact incidence is not known. More serious hypersensivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported rarely.
