To get the ruby he wants, you have to take The Box quest The one where nobody wants to take the box from you , and open it, and kill the demon in the box not too difficult if you're still in the Hive.

Then, you'll take the ruby from the box Hurricane: Yes, you can buy spells for him, and have him learn them; later in the game, you may even be able to get him to teach himself, and you, some powerful magic. Then he'll sell you the ruby in the box for coppers, for which the mage who wants the ruby will give you I think xp. Also, then you can go back to Mar, confront him about the box, and get the items he was bribed with to take the box in the first place. If you use the Asokar priest to disperse the Fiend from Moridor's Box, you get a nasty suprise later in the game.
